Every check ends in a plain result, so you know what the numbers mean.
How to test your touch screen
- Pick Full screen so the edges count. Slide a finger over every square until they all show a green tick.
- Switch to Multi-touch and press as many fingers down as you can.
- Switch to Straight line and draw along a ruler from one edge to the other, in a few directions.
- If the screen acts on its own, run Ghost touch with your hands off.
What the numbers mean
- Coverage: a square that stays blank after slow passes in several directions may be a dead zone. Squares are 44 CSS pixels wide, so very small dead spots can hide inside one.
- Touch points: two are enough for pinch zoom. Smartphones typically report 5 (MDN). We compare your count against what the device reports.
- Wobble: the average distance from a best-fit straight line. Under 6 px with a ruler is fine (our rule of thumb).
- Sudden jumps: the touch point leapt more than 60 px and far more than its usual step. A jump that repeats in one place points to the panel or protector.
- Ghost touches: touches recorded inside the test box while you weren't touching anything.
Common questions
How can I test my touch screen?
Open this page on the device and slide over the grid in full screen. Squares that stay blank suggest a dead zone. Then try the multi-touch, line and ghost touch checks.
How do I do a touch screen test on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari and use the same checks. iPhones don't give web pages true full screen, so turn the phone sideways to reach the top and bottom areas, and expect swipes from the edge to go to the system. Without true full screen, your device report leaves Touch as Not tested.
Is there a secret code to test an Android touch screen?
Some phones have a built-in test menu opened by a dial code, and many Samsung phones are reported to use *#0*#. Codes vary by maker and model, and we haven't tested them. This page works without one.
Why does my touch screen respond when I'm not touching it?
That's called ghost touch. Moisture, a cracked protector, a faulty charger or a damaged panel can cause it. Wipe the screen, remove the protector, unplug the charger and run the ghost check again.
